About Normalfish.net

There has been a personal blog on this domain since 2006. In previous incarnations it has been related to work and discussed issues of secondary education. Specifically, the teaching if Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the use of ICT in teaching. See, I’m a Computing graduate and a trained secondary teacher.

Since 2010, the domain has been home to a blog about the collectible card game (CCG) Magic: the Gathering. It has recorded my journey from becoming terrible to OK, all the way via bad, iffy and hnrgh. Hopefully it will soon journal my escapades as I move towards good.

About six months ago I began hosting my own sites, including other blogs I run as well as my business web presence. This decision coincided with starting to offer my own hosting services along side personal tutoring and web design and development. When I migrated to my own server I made the decision to ditch my old content. Whilst on one hand I didn’t particularly want to wipe out everything I’d written about playing Magic, I also thought it would be a good idea to rid the world of my dodgy Friday Night Magic tournament reports and dreadful deck lists. On reflection, the world gained more than the site lost by starting over.

Since the introduction of Planeswalker Points, replacing the old Elo rating system that used to rate Magic players, I have given up any hope of ever qualifying for any important events based on rating and as a result my game has become much more casual, but no less competitive. But as a friend of mine said recently, “be good, not competitive.” Now any qualifying I manage to do will be through winning Pro Tour Qualifiers and Grand Prix Trials. So the content you will find here will be more tournament reports – hopefully of better games than previously – deck lists from larger tournaments that have caught my eye and lists I’ve had a go at brewing.

I currently live in Devon with my wife, three children and border collie, I work part time in retail and am relaunching a web site services business. I play Magic to meet people, to have a creative outlet and to kill huge monsters. My favourite colour is blue and my favourite card is Mana Leak.
